For National Olympic Committees/Athletes

All eyes will be on the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in China, including spectators from all over the world along with 15,000 members of the international media. By joining Go for Gold and WWF, your country will be recognized by WWF as a Go for Gold Country. Your involvement in the campaign to fight global warming will be communicated through our extensive communications network.

What to Offset

Commitment to Go for Gold can take on several different forms and does not necessarily entail high costs for National Olympic Committees:

  • It may be the entire Olympics and Paralympics delegation from your country which includes all athletes, coaches, staff, and equipment;
  • It may be all athletes from your country, whose carbon costs are paid for by the National Olympic Committee or other sports federations;
  • It may be one sports team from your country, whose carbon costs are paid for by the team or by the National Olympic Committee or other sports federations;
  • It may be one athlete from your country team who decides to take money out of his/her own pocket to pay for the offset costs.
  • The average cost of offsetting a round-trip flight for one individual is around US $100. For larger country teams that may include up to hundreds of athletes or country teams, this may add up to a large sum. In this case, you may consider offsetting the carbon emissions of a one-way flight to or from the Olympics, or one portion of the team's carbon emissions. Countries may also look into fundraising or obtaining sponsorship from other participating countries or corporations, or contact WWF China for assistance.

    Requirements

    Go for Gold asks that carbon offsetting projects be either Gold Standard projects or an alternative offset project that is agreed upon by both WWF and the participating athlete/team/country.

    Go for Gold asks that all carbon offsetting of flights be paid and completed prior to the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games on August 24th, 2008. This is the submission of the official carbon credit slip to WWF upon full payment.

    The Commitment Process

    The WWF office in your country or WWF China will guide you through the following process:

    1. Calculate the total cost of offsetting through using one of the WWF recommended sales points;
    2. If the offset project is not Gold Standard, the final selection must be agreed upon by both WWF and the participating party;
    3. An official letter of commitment will be sent to the Country Representative of WWF China, Mr. Dermot O'Gorman;
    4. The participating party will then receive an official response from WWF accepting your commitment to Go for Gold;
    5. Full payment to the selected offset project must be made prior to the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games on August 24th, 2008, and the official carbon credit slip must be submitted to WWF China;
    6. Certificate of participation awarded to participating athletes and teams.
