Consultant, Greening BRI Initiative

Reports to: Director, Global Coordination, Greening BRI Initiative, WWF China
Location: Beijing
Working period: At least 3 days/week, 4-6 month


The Belt and Road Initiative is a major infrastructure and development plan that, originating from China, is set to reach more than 70 countries across the globe, opening up many of WWF priority areas. While on paper the BRI is set to be ‘green’, a lot of projects planned and in the pipeline are not following those principles. To respond to the threats of BRI projects may bring to WWF key ecoregions, the WWF network has been working towards a lean solution to influence the BRI to achieve its sustainable development commitment through rule settings, implementing of a set of decision support tools and piloting in learning landscapes.

Main Responsibilities: 

• Facilitate the strategy development and successful implementation of WWF’s Greening BRI Initiative, including but not limited to conducting research, organizing workshops and field trips, stakeholder engagement etc.
• Support the development of funding opportunities for WWF China on BRI related work as part of a wider Greening BRI Initiative fundraising programme
• Work with WWF Global Coordinator for Greening BRI Initiative to build relationships with environmental and development NGOs, Government Departments, the scientific institution and WWF Network
• Work with WWF China and WWF network colleagues to support cross-department collaboration and international cooperation
• Work with WWF China practices (e.g., Governance, Climate and Energy, Freshwater and Forest) to identify and act upon emerging threats and opportunities relevant to greening BRI
• Effectively manage the budget raised and other donor and contractual responsibilities
• Work with WWF programme communicators to develop campaign approaches as necessary, and communication outreach to support the Initiative’s objectives
• Other tasks allocated by Greening BRI Global Coordinator.


• Minimum of 5 years’ work experience on programme management, international development/international policy or a relevant field, either in an NGO or the public or private sector
• Preferred master’s degree in related area
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Mandarin and English
• Excellent presentation, communication and facilitation skills
• A broad understanding of the various aspects of BRI Initiative, infrastructure development, business engagement, and macro policy
• Excellent inter-personal skills, and teamwork skills including ability to internal communication, open mind strategic think, self-motivated and innovative and meet deadlines
• Adhere to WWF’s values
