Chief Scientist, Water

WWF, the global conservation organization that has been working in China for 37 years, is looking for a highly skilled professional to be a Chief advisor for water practice. This position will report to Water Practice Leader 


JOB DESCRIPTION


Title: Chief Scientist, Water
Location: Beijing/Shanghai/Wuhan/Changsha
Reports to: Practice Head, Water 


Main Responsibilities: 


Support the Water Practice Leader to develop WWF China’s water practice strategy and assist Water Practice Leader to establish practice goals and objectives specifically in high-level policy and domestic/international partnership maintenance.


Support the WWF China Water Practice Leader for leading the planning and implementation of strategic objectives. Assist the Water Practice Leader to identify potential opportunities for WWF to become more efficient and effective as an organization on water and wetland conservation. Maintain high-level partnership for supporting development of WWF China water practice. Be in charge of special projects of strategic importance as and when required by the Water Practice Leader.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:


Support the Water Practice Leader to develop WWF China’s water practice strategy and assist Water Practice Leader to establish practice goals and objectives. 


Foster close relationships with key players within business, governments, international organizations, NGOs, institutions, foundations and communities; Engage with other Practice team, functional heads in WWF China, other relevant conservation and operation staffs in WWF Network. 
 


Assist the Water Practice Leader to maintain the major partners of policy maker such as MWR,SFA, MEP, MOA, etc., to enlarger policy impact for whole water practice;


Support the Water Practice Leader on the implementation plans by analysing current situation, employing available resources and consulting proper stakeholders; 


Support related project managers to build and maintain WWF’s major policy platform, such as IRBM expert panel, Yellow River Forum,Yangtze Forum,Taihu Forum etc.


Assist the Water Practice Leader to monitoring important and urgent issues which might have big impact on water practice, such as dam building on Poyang & Dongting Lakes,etc. 


Fulfill any other related tasks required by the supervisor.


WORKING RELATIONSHIPS


Internal: work closely with the Water Practice Leader as Water Practice Management Team member; contact regularly with different working stream team of Water Practice, WWF national and programme offices and WWF International team, etc. 


External: work with the related stakeholders in water practice, including Government partners, local NGOs, international NGOs etc. Liaise with external partners, external consultants and other stakeholders.


QUALIFICATIONS


At least 18 years’ relevant work experience.
University degree in Environmental/ Conservation science 
Proven track record of managing internal and external stakeholders to influence 
and drive change
Good knowledge of the international environment, business and sustainable development issues 
Good knowledge of different types of NGO legal entities 
Strong coordination, management and communications skills (speaking, reading and written in both English and Chinese).
Discrete and able to maintain confidences.
Able to work effectively with senior internal and external executives as well as with program teams at all levels of the organizations.
Strong coordination and working with teams experience.
Creative and outgoing personality, with a deep commitment to nature conservation.
Good computer skills (MS Office, Email, Internet).
Ability to quickly adapt to new assignments and developments.
Good multi-tasking skills.
